Legal Opium
Opium and its main product heroin are illegal today throughout the world. However it has not always been illegal. In fact these drugs were legally available as recent as the first world war. In fact Harrods, the prestigious London store, was prosecuted in 1914 for selling opium to a soldier. It was not selling opium that was illegal but rather that the soldier was in uniform. In the 19th century opium was not only legal but was actually highly valued by society. The Royal Horticultural Society awarded a number of prizes for domestic opium growth, for example best plants, best quality and strength and most opium grown on a square yard. On a number of occasions the prizes were won by highly respected members of the community including vicars. Changed times. |
